As your Department Legislative Chairman this year, I am excited to share why this program matters and work with you to advocate for our veterans, service members, military families, and survivors.

Many people think of politics when they hear the word "legislative." The VFW Auxiliary Legislative Program is NOT about political parties - it is about people. It is about ensuring that those who served our nation receive the benefits, care, recognition, and support they have earned.

Every law that improves veterans' healthcare, protects benefits, strengthens military readiness, supports caregivers, or honors our fallen heroes began with someone speaking up. Legislators cannot address issues they do not know about, and that's where we come in. By becoming informed through education and engaging with legislators, Auxiliary members can help shap policies that affect veterans and their families for generations to come.

Each year, the VFW develops Legislative Priorities based on the needs of veterans. These priorities focus on six key areas:

  1. Budget

  2. Health Care

  3. Disability Assistance & Memorial Affairs

  4. Education, Employment & Transition

  5. Military Readiness

  6. National Security, Foreign Affairs & POW/MIA

Throughout the year, we'll explore these priority goals. We will also look at current legislation and learn how it impacts veterans here in Oklahoma.

Remember, you don't have to be a policy expert to make a difference. Stay informed, contact elected officials regarding veteran-related legislation, attend town hall meetings, and support voter education. Every Auxiliary members can be an advocate with a single email, phone call, or letter that brings attention to critical veteran issues.

One of the easiest and most effective ways to become involved is through the VFW Action Corps. This grassroots advocacy network provides updates on important legislation with opportunities to contact lawmakers when action is needed. If you are not already enrolled, I encourage you to join today and become part of a nationwide team of advocates working together on behalf of America's veterans. Please SIGN UP HERE.

The strength of our organization has always been found in members who are willing to stand up, speak out, and serve. We are off to a strong start, with many already reporting their participation in the recent state primary election. Together, we can multiply "The Power of One" ensuring that the promises made to our veterans are promises kept.

Thank you for all you do - "Serving America's Heroes" - and I look forward to working with you as we learn, advocate, and "Help Move the Bill" -- one voice at a time.
